Hi All I'm pretty new to dinghy sailing and the Stratos and have a basic question on using the rudder extension when tacking. On a smaller boat I was taught to rotate the rudder extension forward when tacking, but I often get caught up in the mainsheet bar with the Stratos. I've seen some videos of the Stratos where people rotate the extension aft to avoid this. Any advice?
Hi....if you put in 'warsash training ' into you tube there are some training videos which may help you prepared by David Swift which demonstrates the 'normal' method and may work for you....there are a number of other methods to tack/gybe if you can't push the tiller extension across because the extension is too long as the normal method may not work. One option is to change to a pan handle grip, as you move across the boat move your hand down to the joint and swivel the extension behind you as you step across.....
The other option from the normal dagger grip is to push the tiller extension away from you towards the stern and as you step across swivel it behind you (if that makes sense)....hand change is as normal with the extension behind your back and then swap hands...someone else may explain this better
Thanks for the quick reply. I've seen the warsash video with the 'normal' method in quite calm conditions. I noticed the other methods you mention in stronger winds. Do you tend to use the same technique, or vary depending on conditions?
