Ok First question on the board. Will fitting the rudder from a Stratos Keel to a Stratos Std break the racing rules? Yes, they are different! The keel version has a 2:1 purchase for lifting and dropping, a la Laser 2000. The std version uses a friction clamp, a real drag!

My centreboard stratos rudder has both 2:1 purchase up hauls and downhauls plus the clamp. The clamp on its own is not good enough. Not sure if this is an answer though. |

High. Could you describe how the 2:1 system is set up. We continue to have problems leaving and returning to the beach. Not enough purchase to pull the centre board down or enough to pull it back up when we return. Would like to try to install this arrangement. Regards. |

where it says centreboard, I obviously meant rudder blade. |

We've got 2:1 on the uphaul, 1:1 on the downhaul and a clamp. Downhaul often snags in the rudder case, uphaul isn't too effective, but if I loosen the clamp bolt then let out the downhaul, a quick push on the blade to free it brings it to the surface. I can then tie it up by using the uphaul. Seems to work fine.
Only problem I have had with the rudder is that the spring to hold it all in place was fitted horizontally... duh!! Doesn't work! The rudder managed to get out of the lower gudgeon on a 15-20 knot reach... (2 sails!) the resulting capsize was a sore one! Spring is now vertical, but Sandy McPhail ( Laser Scotland) reckons the 4000's suffered early rudder problems too. A longer lower pintle was the solution.

I had the same problem, replaced the spring vertically and changed the lower pintle for the longer upper pintle. All fine now. |
