Does anyone else have the above problem? The gooseneck is pop rivited together, so I find it almost impossible to fit the boom to the mast on the water - the pin & ring system is too fiddly. However, if the boom is on the mast & I the main not raised it is easy for the boom to scratch the transom. In strong onshore winds I have tried launching with the main raised & the boom on the mast, leaving the aft end of the main to be connected to the boom on the water. This can be just as tricky & damaging. Am I the only one with this problem, or have others a better system?
Hi Geoff my Stratos has an adjustable topping lift fitted, so we can lift the boom klear of the transom and then connect the sail. I also fing the goosneck fitting with the small ring very fiddly. Sure it will cost me a days sailing when I loose the ring in the boat. Have bought two spares! Has anybody replaced this pin/ring witha better fitting? regards, Brian
Please can I heave some details on how you fitted the adjustable topping lift. I too am scratching the transom and would like to hold the boom up while lifting the main sail.
I have a slightly different solution. I do two things to prevent transom scratches. First off I tighten the mainsheet so that the boom rests on top of the central hoop. This works perfectly ok in light winds. In stronger winds F3 and up, I get my crew to release the main sheet as I hoist the main sail. He is also there to hold the boom if required. Of course there are those odd times when the boom end does reach the transom and for this I have glued an old piece of inner tube to the end of the boom. So now, even if the boom does hit the transom it doesn't leave a mark.
