For report on this tragic double fatality see website: http://www.rya.org.uk/newsevents/news/Pages/LessonstobelearntfollowingtragicaccidentatKeilderWater.aspx
Lessons for Stratos sailors seems to be: Don't fit trapeze wires unless you need them, Practice capsizing until you are confident in recovery. Always get on centreboard to right boat - never go under to try to rescue someone trapped. Fit a shock-cord preventer so that, even if inverted, enough centreboard sticks out to get hold of.
Let's hope we never have to read of another tragedy like this. Mike.

hi
it makes hard reading,
I think I will fit the airbag every time now, not just with the kids in, 50 litres of air on top of the mast enables you to even stand on the mast with no event.
Totally agree with mikes advice above, elastic should be mandatory on the centre board strap.

Just reading the posts of Sept 09 about the horrible accident on Keilder.
Could you clarify what you mean by fitting a shock cord preventer? I see what it is for but cannot see quite what you do to achieve this.
By the way, you might be interested in a modification I have made to my boat to help getting in over the transom. /Users/davidduckham/Pictures/iPhoto Library/Modified/2009/29 Jul 2009/DSC_0047.jpg/Users/davidduckham/Pictures/iPhoto Library/Modified/2009/29 Jul 2009/DSC_0048.jpg/Users/davidduckham/Pictures/iPhoto Library/Modified/2009/29 Jul 2009/DSC_0050.jpg
I don't know if this will work but I have parked 3 photos of it above. Basically it is a pull down piece of rope (auto retracted by elastic) that parks itself on the transom beside the rudder. If you are in the water you pull it down and put your foot in it and up you go. It makes me feel much more confident, particularly if sailing solo. I would really recommend this modification.
If anyone wants more details, send me an eMail and I will give them to you. David@duckham.me.uk.

Hi guys, Could someone please explain how to set up a shock cord preventer or even direct me to where I might see a photo of one. I would like to set one up but dont know how.
Many thanks,

If you attach the shockcord to the centreboard handle and then when it is in the down position take it back to the foot strap retainers (in the centre of the boat, it can go either side) and clip it on........make sure it is tight enough to keep the board down but some give in case you inadvertently touch bottom ! It does'nt really matter where you attach it but it will give stop the board coming up. The other option is to replace the centreboard brake but it is a bit 'fiddley' and this option is simple but effective |
