As a new Stratos (second hand)owner (270)I have few questions which hopefully may be answered via this forum by someone with a bit of patience !(class association membership about to be posted !)?
Slot gasket - mine is looking a bit tired and worn...any particular tips re fitting/material (cloth/mylar)on this class....
Forestay...have read with interest thoughts on tying off to mast but having lost jib halyards on other boats does this leave the mast a bit vunerable ? Is the gennaker a nightmare to gybe with it attached (will be trying it both ways very shortly)
Main halyard - should there be a block under the cleat...I don't seem to have one and hence no purchase and am about to fit one if it does'nt offend class rules
Rudder retainer clip - mine was horizontal (very strange) and I have now put it vertical (is this correct as i am conscious of the previous advice re broken pintles ?)
Reefing - mine does not seem to have single line reefing through the boom. The forward reefing line comes directly from the mast through the reefing eyes and back to a cleat whilst the aft one is via the boom(works very well but I have read about sinlge line reefing on this class)
Gunwales - does anyone use anything like progrip or similar on the gunwales for trapezing/is it allowed ?
Jib Furling - I note the jib furling which seems to work very well, has anyone used this to reef the jib if needed, does it work...my jib is pretty tired looking so I don't really mind trying this as a last resort !
Nationals ...as a family we are new to the 'science' of asymetrics having moved from an Enterprise and 2 boys who sail a Topper and a Radial..(if we stayed out of everyones way while we struggle with the Gennekar) would a visit to the Nationals be worthwhile ?
Phew...think thats it but the boat seems to be great and am looking forward to many years saling (with hopefully a frequent Blast or two!)
If you have got this far thanks for reading
Neil

> Do you mean the centreboard slot?
Forestay...have read with interest thoughts on tying off to mast but having lost jib halyards on other boats does this leave the mast a bit vunerable ? Is the gennaker a nightmare to gybe with it attached (will be trying it both ways very shortly)
> I've tied my forestay with several loops of shockcord, which keeps the tension and allows to leave it in place after hoisting the jib.
Main halyard - should there be a block under the cleat...I don't seem to have one and hence no purchase and am about to fit one if it does'nt offend class rules
> There should definitely be a small block about 10-20cm below the cleat. You can see it (just) on the following picture (there's a white rope going through it): http://www.beveridges.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/pages/vang.html or go to Hints & Tips, Rigging, 3rd picture from the right on the 2nd row.
Rudder retainer clip - mine was horizontal (very strange) and I have now put it vertical (is this correct as i am conscious of the previous advice re broken pintles ?)
> It is normally horizontal, but usually people replace it with an auto-release cleat (still horizontal). Check 1st picture from the left, 4th roz on the page above.
Reefing - mine does not seem to have single line reefing through the boom. The forward reefing line comes directly from the mast through the reefing eyes and back to a cleat whilst the aft one is via the boom(works very well but I have read about sinlge line reefing on this class)
> There are two reefing lines; yours look correct.
Gunwales - does anyone use anything like progrip or similar on the gunwales for trapezing/is it allowed ?
> I bought my Stratos used from a sailing school a strips of grip tape had been already stuck on the gunwales.
Jib Furling - I note the jib furling which seems to work very well, has anyone used this to reef the jib if needed, does it work...my jib is pretty tired looking so I don't really mind trying this as a last resort !
> I've tried that in the past without much success. There should be a thread on that in the archived message board.

> To my great shame I haven't made it to the Nationals yet - I'll let others respond.

Pascal
Thanks for replies
The slot gasket does cover the centre board casing when the board is down preventing water entering and slowing the boat down. I have recently replaced the slot gasket with a Mylar strip on another boat and was wondering if anyone had done the same in the Stratos rather than using cloth/fabric.
The pictures I've now found from your directions are very helpful. I'm a lot ahppier with the primary retaining clip on the transom being vertical (as in the pics)
Thanks again
Neil

Sorry I misunderstood your question about the rudder retaining clip - I thought you were talking about the retaining cleat.
I can't comment on the centreboard slot as I have a keel - I'm sure the centreboard cohort will have an opinion.

Yes, go to the Nationals - there's a great mix of people and expertise & it's one of the best times to meet other Stratos sailors on and off the water. We've been to all but one & had a great time (even when we came last!).
On your Stratos fittings etc, if you're sailing anywhere with low water it's worth fitting an auto-release cleat, as Pascal mentioned, on the tiller for the rudder downhaul.

Neil,
I do tie off the forestay because a) we found that it can foul the jib when furling and b)the gennaker when gybing (bad news!) The method I have adopted is a piece of shock cord on the end of the forestay with a plastic hook on the end, clipped to the inglefield clip near the forward, foot of the mast (gennaker pole shockcord pully attachment). This has never let me down. I also inspect the stays and fittings for damage fairly regularly.
Laser sell a white ruberised stick-on grip-strip for the gunwale - works great and doesn't trash wet suits like some products!
Finally, the gennaker gybes really well, we're not experts but through frequent use we have adopted the following proceedure: keep the boat flat, commit to the gybe and as the gennaker collapses sheet in hard on the leward sheet to pull the gennaker across and set it quickley. Raise and drop on a training run. Its truely great fun once your crew gets competent at trapeezing with the gennaker up in a stiff breeze and you get a good reach.
Finally, the auto release cleat on the rudder 'downhaul', mentioned below by Sophie, is in my view, an essential addition.
Its a great boat, enjoy the sailing.
Dave

Hi Dave,
We sail in very shallow conditions at Whitstable - everything is shallow there. Nodbody there seems to have an auto release cleat on their rudder. Do you have a particular part number from a supplier in mind?
