Having just bought a s/h Stratos (sail no. 568) I am trying to figure out how the mainsail reefing lines are threaded. The original Laser rigging manual, and the photos on this website suggest that the fore and aft reefing lines are separate, but the new Stratos rigging manual indicates (diagram on p.21) that the fore and aft reefing is controlled by a single line.

Can anyone confirm that older Stratos dinghies are rigged for dual reefing lines?

There's no sheave on the front fitting on my boom, so presumably it's not possible to convert the older booms for single line reefing.

Thanks,
Sayling

I spoke to Rob Guthridge at Laser. The older booms are dual line reefing.

Here's my understanding of how it goes:

forward reefing line:
  • attachment at mast
  • up port side of sail to topmost reefing cringle
  • down stbd side of sail to next reefing cringle
  • down port side of sail to next reefing cringle
  • down stbd side of sail to cleat on mast

aft reefing line:
  • aft cleat at fore end of boom
  • into boom through slot
  • out of boom at sheave near aft end on top of boom
  • up stbd side of sail to bottom reefing cringle
  • up port side of sail to next reefing cringle
  • up stbd side of sail to next reefing cringle
  • port side of sail to bowline round boom.
The tack, cunningham and outhaul cringles are not used by the reefing lines.

Reefing procedure:
  • release kicker
  • pull on aft reefing line – boom tips up – and cleat
  • let main halyard down and pull on forward reefing line and cleat – boom levels again.
  • re-tighten kicker.

Sounds straightforward enough. Now to try it out on dry land!

Thanks, Martin, I will have a word with Laser.

I have an older model sail no.370 (Black spars). It had various fittings on the mast for reefing. I replaced the mast with a new (silver) one which does not have these fittings. Laser informed me that the reefing system has changed and that I would do well to buy the new boom as well. It all depends on whether you have the black or silver spars. Speak to Laser
